Winter-Freeze Tree Preparation
Damage caused by ice and snow during the winter in New York City and Long Island can cause tremendous damage to you’re trees and plants. Protection or prevention of you’re trees freezing over is the best possible way to deal with this problem. Frost damage can be handled by covering trees in burlap or cloth. We don’t recommend plastic because this can cause further damage. We always leave the top open to the sky to allow for air and light penetration needed for growth. Our experts will also recommend keeping you’re trees watered throughout the growth season into the fall as a means to prevent winter injury. Anti-desiccant and anti-transpirant sprays are also recommended for winter burn.
To encourage fall root growth and reduce root injury, make sure you’re trees and shrubs have to 6-8 inches of mulch above the soil. Temperatures at or below 0 to 10 degrees Faranheit will kill roots of most trees and shrubs. During the winter, soil will repeatedly freeze and thaw. This causes it to expand and contract which will damage roots and heave shrubs and trees out of the ground. A 4 to 6 inch layer of mulch will help maintain more constant soil temperatures.
Snow and ice damage can cause bend and break tree branches. The best way to combat this for relatively small trees is to wrap them together tied with strips of strong cloth or nylon two thirds of the way above the weak crotches. These have to be removed during the spring to prevent girdling. For larger trees, the main branches should be cabled together by a professional tree services company.
